Total Body Photography and Mole Mapping for Melanoma Detection
At Aura Dermatologie, Dr. Amina Bougrine and her team are dedicated to providing patients in and around Montreal, Quebec, with the services to address their skin health needs. This includes regularly providing skin cancer screenings and surveillance examinations to allow early diagnosis of melanoma in particular. One technique used to achieve this is total body photography or mole mapping.
What is mole mapping?
Mole (or nevius) mapping is a non-invasive skin imaging technique. It involves taking detailed, standardized photographs to document and monitor the moles on your body over time. This technique has been shown to allow the early detection of new melanomas in high risk patients and facilitates the documentation of skin changes over time in patients at risk of melanoma.
Mole mapping is a state-of-the-art documentation tool that allows our dermatologist to accurately and systematically identify new or changing moles. This technique increases the chances of diagnosing melanoma at its earliest stages and reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies.
We use DermEngine skin imaging technology, with the possibility of using an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to assist our dermatology doctor in analyzing your images.
Who is a good candidate for mole mapping?
Mole mapping is helpful if you have more than 50 moles and have one or more of the following:
- A personal history of one or more cutaneous melanomas.
- A personal history of amelanotic melanoma.
- Several pink moles.
- Several atypical moles.
- A family history of melanoma in a first-degree relative.
- You have a genetic syndrome or mutation predisposing to the development of cutaneous melanoma (e.g., FAMMM syndrome/CDKN2A mutation, BAP1, BRCA2, or POT1 mutation).
You have a genetic syndrome or mutation predisposing to the development of cutaneous melanoma (e.g., FAMMM syndrome/CDKN2A mutation, BAP1, BRCA2, or POT1 mutation).
At Aura Dermatologie, we do not offer this service to patients who are not considered to be at high risk of melanoma, as the benefits of this tool are not demonstrated in such cases.
