Neuromodulator Injections

Yes, neuromodulators have applications beyond the treatment of dynamic wrinkles and they may be considered for several other cosmetic and medical applications that are well-established in clinical practice.

These include the reduction of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), the relief of jaw pain and tension associated with temporomandibular joint disorders, and the treatment of chronic migraines. In the cosmetic field, neuromodulators may also be considered for applications such as jaw contouring in cases of muscle hypertrophy, or the correction of a gummy smile.

Other applications exist but fall outside of standard approved indications. These off-label uses require a thorough discussion during a consultation with Dr. Bougrine to carefully evaluate their appropriateness, limitations, and potential risks for your individual situation.

There is no universal “right age” to begin neuromodulator treatments. Some people start in their late twenties or early thirties as a preventive measure, while others wait until wrinkles become more pronounced.

Our dermatologist personalizes each treatment plan according to your needs, precisely targeting the appropriate muscles and adjusting the necessary dose for a subtle and harmonious result.

That said, it is important to know that temporary effects may occur in the first few days following treatment, including a slight feeling of heaviness or tension in the treated area. These effects are generally short-lived and subside as the product settles. In rare cases, temporary asymmetry may also be observed — which is why a post-treatment follow-up appointment is always offered to our patients at two weeks.

You may start noticing changes within three to five days, but the full effects typically appear around two weeks after treatment. Depending on your metabolism, muscle activity, and lifestyle factors, the results last approximately three months. The treated muscles will gradually recover the ability to move. Regular treatments three to four times a year over several years can maintain long-term smoothness and prolong the time between sessions for some patients.

Before the procedure, our dermatologist will review your medical history during your consultation. This is when you and your dermatologist will review expectations, discuss possible risks, and consider the anticipated results of the procedure. It is important to know that neuromodulator injections cannot be performed on pregnant or lactating patients or on patients with certain neurologic diseases, or taking certain medications.

The potential risks and side effects associated with neuromodulator injections include, but are not limited to:

• Bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site.
• Headache or discomfort for a few days.
• Temporary weakness of surrounding muscles.
• Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions to the injection (extremely rare).
• In extremely rare cases, more serious complications may occur.

For ideal results, it is important to avoid rubbing the treated areas, which could cause the injected neuromodulator to migrate to another area. It is also recommended to avoid lying down or engaging in strenuous exercise for at least four hours after your appointment. Additional precautions may be recommended at the time of your procedure, depending on the areas treated.
