What are keloid scarss?

Keloids are abnormal scars that form due to excessive scar tissue production after surgery or trauma to the skin. They occur more commonly in individuals with darker skin. Keloids are raised, firm, and may have a shiny or smooth appearance. They can be different sizes and shapes and usually grow larger over time. Keloids can be itchy and painful.

Why do keloid scars form?

Keloids typically form due to an overproduction of collagen, a protein that helps heal wounds. Excessive collagen production can lead to the formation of keloids. This might happen due to genetic factors and skin trauma, such as surgery, piercings, burns, or acne. Keloids are more common in people with darker skin.

What can be done to address keloid scars?

At Aura Dermatologie, we offer the surgical excision of small to medium keloids, followed by intralesional corticosteroid injections. Keloid removal surgery is a form of scar revision surgery designed to remove the excess scar tissue and inject cortisone at regular intervals to minimize the risk of its reappearance. Intralesional corticosteroid injections help to prevent the recurrence of the keloid by reducing inflammation and minimizing the production of scar tissue. The use of compression earrings is usually recommended after the surgical removal of keloids on the earlobe.

What are some other keloid scar treatment options to consider?

Following your consultation, our dermatologist may recommend consideration of other treatment options which may or may not be combined with surgery. These include 5-FU injections, ablative laser therapy, laser-assisted drug delivery and radiation therapy for larger or more complex keloids. These treatments can help reduce the size and thickness of keloids and improve their appearance. It is important to note that, unfortunately,  keloids are difficult to remove entirely and may have a high risk of recurrence regardless of the treatment used.

How can we prevent the formation of keloid scars on the skin?

Preventing keloid formation can be challenging, but you can take a few steps to minimize your potential risk. If you are prone to forming keloids or have a family history, it is important to  avoid unnecessary skin trauma or injury, to properly care for wounds and piercings, and seek medical treatment promptly.
